I’m not a crunchy mom. I want to be. I admire crunchy moms. But to keep it real, that looks like a lot of work, and quite frankly, life is pretty hard already! But let’s face it, the world today isn’t what it was in our parents’ and grandparents’ generation.
Family life is harder than I thought it would be. Juggling parenting with a full time teaching job– grading, lesson plans, extracurricular activities and duties, along with housework, marriage, and church made me feel like I was failing at virtually everything. I can relate to feeling overwhelmed, stressed out, and burned out.
And even though I am passionate about raising my children with healthy habits, my exhausted brain routinely gravitated towards the one thing my picky children wouldn’t balk at– the frozen pizza.
What I’m trying to say is that I get it.
I get how hard it is to find good nutritious choices in supermarkets that are whole food deserts with shelves laden only with processed foods containing pesticides, herbicides, chemicals and dyes.
I know how overwhelming it can be to keep up with the conflicting information about what is good, bad, or innocuous either way. I know what it’s like to look at a food label like it’s in a foreign language.
I can relate to feeling like work got every last ounce of failing energy and at the end of the day, family got the pitiful scraps.
I am all too familiar with a home that closely resembles a war zone and that overwhelming feeling of “just forget it!”
I feel you, mom.
It’s not for the feint of heart– raising children in this chemical and digital era, in which both parents burn it from both ends all day.
How do we find balance in it all?
But what if we could just start where we are and not be perfect? What if we could try to just make one small choice a week or a day that would move us one step closer to a healthy, balanced, God-honoring lifestyle for ourselves and our families?
What if we could just start here?
