There is Beauty in Beginning
There is nothing sweeter in the world than the pitter-patter of little baby steps across the house. Sometimes, even on the hardest parenting days, I stop and watch my little ones from the staircase chasing each other through the house– the sound of their steps like a vibrant off-key melody.
First one set. Then the other set of steps close behind followed by laughter. Their steps are loud and raucous– uncertain little stomps parading with enthusiasm for what, it doesn’t matter– just living for the moment one vivacious stomp at a time.
Our babies crawl before they walk and then toddle with uncertain rhythm and balance– often holding onto someone’s finger for stability and security. When they finally gain trust in themselves, they let go and start to run just a little bit at first. We stand by, hands clutching our hearts at the beauty and the inspiration of success despite fear and uncertainty.
I thought of this image often as we began our own baby steps into healthier living. It can be so overwhelming.
We want to make good choices! But then we must weed through conflicting advice and hard to identify conflicts of interest all while simply trying to manage life—the day to day stress of parenting, jobs, church, and extracurriculars.
But that’s only crawling. Then comes the hard part– the part that takes true balance and belief in our purpose, and that is the actual living. Making plans is easy, but following through with them despite time constraints and logistical hang ups is the true challenge. So we baby step.
The First Real Step
If you took inventory of your home, your pantry, your schedule, what would be one word that would describe them OR one word that explains the emotion you just felt thinking of those things?
Let’s start there! Check out these posts: “The First Step to Making Real Health Changes that Last” and “Why you Should Choose Organic.”
Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:9)
